This video presents the section “Science” from the (2019) paper “Transwomen in elite sport: scientific and ethical considerations”, written by Taryn Knox, Lynley C Anderson, and Alison Heather.
In the full paper the authors discuss the International Olympic Committee (IOC) guidelines on transwomen athletes competing in women’s sports, and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) guidelines on the inclusion of trans people in sport. They review the science on whether transwomen have an unfair advantage compared to women and find that they do. In the final part of the paper they consider various argument for inclusion regardless of the unfair advantage, and dismiss them in turn. Ultimately they suggest that it might be time for more sophisticated sporting categories than just male/female.
