Holly Lawford-Smith, Senior Lecturer in Political Philosophy at the University of Melbourne talks to Writer, Filmmaker and Women’s Rights Activist, Vaishnavi Sundar. Vaishnavi’s film, ‘But What Was She Wearing?’ was the first feature-length documentary about workplace sexual harassment in India. This is a pre-recorded conversation that is going to be part of the undergraduate course on feminism that Holly would teach.
This conversation covers sexual violence in India, the caste system, and many other forms of oppression that Indian women face. Vaishnavi talks about how a blanket feminism model might not work for all, especially developing countries, because there are far too many barriers that fall in the way of achieving women’s sex-based rights. She argues how all forms of oppressions are interlinked and one can’t be eliminated without eliminating all of it.
